Planet Windsurfing Abu Soma

Our brand new Planet Windsurfing Station is on the southern end of the huge Soma Bay, right in front of the newly built, five star Caribbean World Resort Soma Bay and only a few short minutes away from the well known Intercontinental Resort.

The whole bay gives rise to absolutely sensational - and incredibly varied - windsurfing and kiting conditions: flat water, small to medium sized waves and shallow areas offer something for every level of ability. Due to the small, offshore islands and reefs, the entire bay feels as though it is framed, which gives a very pleasant feeling of security when you are out windsurfing and kiting.

And it is not just above water that the bay is fantastic: the under water world is also breathtaking, and the beautiful reefs are ideal for snorkellers and divers. The best known of the off shore islands is Tobia Island – which is pretty much directly in front of the Planet Windsurfing Station and is one of the most beautiful places in the bay to windsurf, snorkel, swim and relax. Very often you can have this wonderful desert island all to yourself, except on those lucky occasions when the dolphins are out playing in the turquoise coloured waters

The windsurfing station sits on the left hand side - in other words up wind - of the hotel beach. From there you can start really easily as the short, shallow area running 5 to 10 metres from the shore is more than enough for beach starting. The wind blows in the morning offshore/side-offshore and turnes around lunchtime to side-/sideoffshore. Depending on the strongness and the direction the wind is at the first 50 - 100 m more or less gusty, but further out absolut constant. If the wind is strong enough you can plane right from the beach on water as smooth as a mirror until you reach the first waves some way out, which invite you to jump for joy! There are no reefs to get in the way which means that you are guaranteed long reaches for some serious speed – you can reach or broad reach directly to Tobia Island. To the right of the station - in the lee (about 300 – 400 metres), the shore bends to form a bay, which means you cannot be washed out. From there you can comfortably walk back to the station. Also, in this curve of the bay which is about 200 metres in the lee of the station, is the shallow standing area which is perfect for teaching at all levels.

The Station is led by Egon and Franzi. Both have long years of experience in Safaga and in Soma Bay: they know the spot so well now that it has almost become their local area!
